18th-century Dummy Board of a Man in Turkish Costume
Treated at Winterthur Museum, 2014-2015
Supervisor: Joyce Hill Stoner
This object crosses over my different areas of interest in conservation. Dummy boards or "silent companions" were used as playful entertainment within the domestic interior or to liven empty spaces. Their decorative surfaces are also examples of skilled trompe l'oeil painting. For more information about the social history of dummy boards and the story associated with this Turkish figure see the Historical Addendum to my examination report.
