What is art conservation?

Art conservation is the preservation of cultural heritage. It is guided by a code of ethics (in the U.S. described by the professional body of the American Institute for Conservation) in order to make as little impact on cultural material as possible during preservation treatment. Conservation activities encompass archival documentation, examination of condition and manufacturing techniques, scientific analysis, preventive care, and treatment. Today conservators are trained through graduate study that encompasses chemistry and applied science, art history, studio art and craft practice, and hands-on training through treatment, workshops, and internships.
