Mat Sample Project, Heugh-Edmondson Conservation Services

Proper exhibition and display of works of art on paper using high quality, stable materials helps decrease the risk of damage and deterioration to an object.

At Heugh-Edmondson Conservation Services, Emily completed a kit of standard types of mats for works of art on paper. This kit can be used as a teaching tool for students and also for future clients.

Crosspiece is the only part adhered directly to the backboard. Therefore, the hinges can be more easily slit and the mat could be reused for another work of art.

Two-ply board

The artwork is first hinged onto a two-ply rising mat board which is then t-hinged with linen tape to the backboard of the mat.

This extra board not only provides additional support for the artwork, but it allows for more efficient mat changes (different colors to match exhibition design) for works of art that go on exhibition often.
